Feature Car – Tim’s VY SS Drag Ute

Anybody who has attended a drag meet in Melbourne in 2010 would no doubt recognise Tim’s black VY SS Ute. Originally it was Tim’s daily driver and weekend drag toy, powered by a twin turbo LS1. It evolved in this configuration until Tim managed to run a 9.9 second pass, smashing the record for fastest un-opened LS1. This was undoubtedly the limit of the factory engine and to go any faster Tim would need to build an engine, HPF was happy to help.

The current engine combination produces around 720rwkw and to date has run a best of 9.22sec and 160mph with a 60ft time with plenty of scope for improvement! In short the engine is based around an iron block LS2 at 402ci capacity with twin Garret GT3582 turbochargers pushing up to 22psi. Driveline has been substantially upgraded with a powerglide transmission, upgraded shafts and full spool IRS diff.

Chassis work consists of an HPF mini tub installation, with modified and relocated springs and shocks. The diff remains standard in IRS configuration with a full spool centre. Power is transferred to the tarmac by 29.5×19.5″ MT drag slicks.

Interior is only whats necessary, gone are the heavyweight factory seats with a single drag seat now taking its place. A rollcage, harness and parachute lever have been added to keep authorities happy and Tim safe. Other additions are a Sparco steering wheel, boost guage and B&M shifter.
